June 2017 Meeting Recap

Our “Ice Breaker” at the meeting was to share something you’ve accomplished this year, and something you’d like to accomplish by the end of the year. Thanks everyone for sharing your accomplishments and hopes for the last half of 2017!

Author Presentation

Elisabeth Woo and Nichole Ramirez, authors of “The Fussy Cut Sampler,” gave an amazing presentation at our June meeting! They brought a lot of examples of individual blocks utilizing their techniques, and it was fascinating to see all the detail and work involved in each block. They discussed how the book came about, the publishing process, gave helpful tips and techniques, and answered questions from guild members. Their blog is thefussycutsampler.com.
And you can follow them on Instagram for more fussy-cut inspiration. Elisabeth’s Instagram is @elisabew and Nichole’s is @catwithfins.

QuiltCon 2018Super volunteer signups have passed, but there are still volunteer opportunities. Keep an eye out for an email from the MQG about more volunteering opportunities. Registration began earlier in the week, and the popular classes were fully booked within 15 minutes!

QuiltCon Charity Quilt UpdateMany members met at the last sew-in. Gail picked up the solid Kona and Moda fabrics so people could see the colorways in person. The committee thinks that Kona is the way to go as these will be easy to pick up and they liked the colors better. At the meeting, a timeline for completing the quilt was created to keep us on schedule. After a brainstorming session, Sandy created a rough draft of a quilt, and Lucinda put it into EQ7 to create a potential pattern and filled in some potential color options. The next meeting will be at the sew-in on July 9th! At the July sew-in, we’re hoping to complete this step of the schedule: Design Finalized – Assignments, and possibly begin cutting fabric. Thank you Karen for the update.

Volunteers

We are still looking for a Social Media volunteer to update the blog, social media, and take pictures! Please talk to an officer or send us an email if you are at all interested. We are also looking for people to demos! We have a lot of experienced quilters who could do some demos, so if you have an idea, send us an email.

Workshops

Elise brought examples of bags for a potential workshop! We will be sending out a separate email with details as soon as this has been finalized.

My Small World

Here is your chance to make a really fun and beautiful quilt, using a pattern designed by Jen Kingwell. This is a 6 month Block of the Month project that, with guidance and artistic talent provided by Cecile, will challenge you to select many different fabrics from your stash, and learn how to play with a variety of color combinations. You will also learn several quilting techniques, including a new method of hand applique and paper piecing.  After taking the 6 sessions, you will not only gain confidence in playing with color, but will create a beautiful and unique wall hanging. This class will meet the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 10:00-3:00, starting August 15 for 6 months.  The first class is $50, and the other 5 classes are $40 each.

Your Personal Journey into the world of Jen Kingwell

The class is already full, but please sign up on the waiting list with your email address, and Cecile will contact you when space opens up. This class is perfect for anyone who loves Jen Kingwell, or is currently working on any of her 43 patterns, or who wants to start one. This class will meet the 2nd Saturday of every month, beginning August 12.  Each class costs $50, and you only pay for the classes you attend.

Independent study with Cecile

For intermediate and advanced level quilters, this class is your chance to bring a new or ongoing quilt project and work one-on-one with Cecile to create something unique and special.  Cecile’s help will include tips on playing with color, fabric selection and design layout.  Since this is a one-on-one session with Cecile, time, place and cost will be discussed with each individual quilter.

July Challenge

Challenge quilts are due at the next meeting! Bring a finished quilt from a pattern that you’ve had for awhile to the July meeting. There will be FABULOUS prizes so there’s still time to make a quilt for the challenge.

Block Lotto

This month’s Block Lotto turned out amazing! The July Block Lotto requires English Paper Piecing. Lucinda spends a lot of time putting these detailed instructions together, taking photos of her process, AND doing all of the planning for each month’s Block Lotto—THANK YOU LUCINDA!

Southern California Quilter’s Run

This will be held over two weekends this year! The dates are July 13-16 and July 20-23. The Quilter’s Run is a great opportunity to visit quilt and fabric shops in the area and get some inspiration from each shop. http://www.quiltersrun.com/

Scrap Swap

3 scrap bags were taken home for the Scrap Swap. If you took home a bag, bring it to the July meeting with your scraps. Thank you Elise for coordinating this!
